Short answer
Start with the tourbillon. On the genuine Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon the carriage sits at 6 o'clock with no upper bridge over it, and the balance wheel rides inside the rotating cage. That is what "flying" means. Most fakes in this reference either tuck a cheap tourbillon under a visible bridge or fake the whole thing with a spinning disc and a balance that never moves. If the tourbillon passes, move on to the case, the bezel screws and the markings on the back.
The watch is also a six-figure object. Anyone offering a "new" one for a few thousand dollars is selling a counterfeit, and in the United States that trade is a federal offence, not a grey area.
What the real reference is
The Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon is a 41 mm watch built around calibre 2950, an automatic movement with a flying tourbillon at 6 o'clock, a beat rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) and about 65 hours of power reserve. AP has released it in steel, titanium and pink gold, with openworked dials and with more conventional finishes, some of them gem-set. Retail is well into six figures and the secondary market has not been kind either.
That spec sheet matters because it gives you things to check. A 4 Hz tourbillon, or a bridge sitting over the cage, is not an AP.
The tourbillon test
I look at this first because it is the hardest thing to copy and the easiest thing to see.
- No upper bridge. The cage is supported from below only, so you see straight through the gap above it.
- The balance wheel rotates with the cage. Watch it for a full minute. The wheel should travel around the dial as the carriage turns.
- Rate. Genuine is 3 Hz, which looks a touch slower and calmer than the 4 Hz movements most replicas use.
- Finish. Cage arms are anglage-polished by hand, with black-polished steel and no tool marks. Replica cages look stamped.
Case, bezel and bracelet
The octagonal bezel screws on a real Royal Oak are white gold, and they do a job: they pass through the bezel and thread into nuts you can see on the caseback. On fakes the screws are often glued or purely decorative, and they do not line up with anything on the back.
Finishing is the other giveaway. AP alternates satin-brushed surfaces with polished bevels, and the transition between them is sharp and consistent. Replica cases blur that line, with soft bevels and brushing that wanders. The bracelet should articulate with no rattle and taper in steps that match the case.
Dial and hands
Applied markers and the AP monogram should be crisp, mirror-polished and set dead level. Look at the gap under each marker and at the printing under a loupe. Fakes show fuzzy lettering, uneven lume fill and markers that sit slightly off axis. If the version has a date, the aperture should be cleanly cut with a frame and a disc that matches the dial. Crooked or pale date wheels are common on copies. Hands should be faceted, with polished edges that catch light along their length.
Caseback and paperwork
Genuine casebacks are engraved deep and clean with the reference, the movement number and the metal. Laser-etched fakes look shallow and slightly grey. The sapphire should sit flush with no glue line. Paperwork follows: a real watch comes with a numbered certificate, a matching serial on the case and the movement, and a service history you can verify with AP. A seller who cannot produce matching numbers, or who refuses an authentication appointment, has answered the question for you.
Price and the legal side
Counterfeit watches are not a victimless shortcut. Importing them into the US is illegal and customs can seize the parcel, and trafficking in counterfeit goods carries criminal penalties. Resale is close to impossible, and no authorised watchmaker will service a fake.
Before you pay, check
- Tourbillon: no upper bridge, balance travels with the cage, 3 Hz.
- Screws: white gold, functional, aligned with nuts on the back.
- Weight and feel, especially on gold versions.
- Caseback engraving depth and matching numbers.
- Third-party authentication from someone who handles AP daily.
Run those five checks in order and most fakes never make it past the first one.
