"V5" on a fake Cartier listing is a seller-assigned revision number. It is not an official Cartier model code, not a factory designation registered anywhere, and not a quality grade anyone can verify. Cartier publishes no version history for counterfeits and licenses no workshop to make them. A V5 label tells you one thing: the seller wants you to read this batch as newer than a V4. That claim is unverifiable by design.
Where Version Numbers Come From
Replica sellers build tier ladders to create the impression of steady improvement. V1 through V5 sounds like software releases, with each step implying fixed flaws. In practice, the numbers are assigned per seller. A V5 from one vendor can be older stock than a V3 from another, and the same physical watch often carries different version numbers on different storefronts. No central body issues, audits, or tracks these labels.
What a Version Label Cannot Tell You
- Which movement is inside the case, or whether it is the movement in the photos
- The actual case alloy and its plating thickness
- Water resistance, which is untested on most replica cases
- Whether the unit shipped matches the batch described
- Whether the batch described exists at all
Checks to Run on a Listing
- Request a photo of the caseback and movement, not the studio render.
- Compare dial printing and font weight against Cartier's own published images of that reference.
- Ask for the case diameter and thickness, then compare them to the genuine specification.
- Request a timestamped photo of the specific unit that will ship.
- Get the return policy in writing before any payment clears.
The US Legal Position
Cartier is a registered trademark in the United States. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal offense under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, and US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit merchandise at the border. Personal import of counterfeit goods is prohibited even when the buyer intends to keep the item and never resell it. Reselling a counterfeit watch, or listing one as genuine, adds trademark and fraud exposure on top of the import issue.
Risks That Have Nothing to Do With Authenticity
Replica watches arrive with no manufacturer warranty and no parts network. A failed movement means a full replacement rather than a service. Plated cases wear through at the lugs and crown. Payment methods common in this market offer limited dispute options, and chargeback windows close fast. None of this improves with a higher version number.
Is V5 the Best Version?
There is no best version, because there is no standard to rank against. Any seller can print V5 on a listing today and V6 next month. If you want a Cartier on your wrist, buy a genuine piece from an authorized dealer, or buy a certified pre-owned example with box and papers from a seller who will put the authentication in writing. If the budget does not reach a Cartier, a legitimately branded watch at that price gives you a warranty, service, and resale value. A version label gives you none of those.
