Start with the reference, not the photos

Cartier does not publish a Rotonde reference called "4004." Official Rotonde de Cartier references use the W prefix, for example W1556368. The "4004" label comes from replica trading lists. Treat it as a seller code, not a Cartier code. Ask the seller to confirm case diameter, thickness, movement type and dial layout in writing before you pay.

Three questions to ask first

  1. Which movement is inside? Quartz, Asian automatic, or a clone of the Cartier 430 MC. Movement type sets the price and the service life.
  2. Is the case solid steel or plated? A plated case shows rub-through at the lugs and crown.
  3. What is the return window? Get the day count and the return shipping cost in writing.

A seller who answers these three questions with numbers is a better risk than one who answers with photos only.

Parameters that set the grade

  • Case diameter: 40 mm is the common figure for the Rotonde line. Ask for a caliper photo next to the case.
  • Case thickness: 9 to 11 mm on automatic versions. A thin case over a quartz movement is a common mismatch.
  • Crystal: sapphire on the top grades, mineral glass on the low ones. Ask the seller to state which.
  • Dial print: check the Roman numerals and the railway track at 10x zoom. Soft print shows at 40 mm.
  • Strap and clasp: leather with an alligator grain is standard. Ask if the clasp is milled steel or stamped sheet.
  • Water resistance: most replicas carry no tested rating. Do not swim with one.

Pitfalls

  • Stock photos lifted from another seller. Run a reverse image search on each file.
  • "Swiss made" text on a watch that sells below the price of a Swiss movement alone.
  • Prices far under the market band for the stated movement. The gap is usually the movement.
  • Payment by gift card, crypto, or a friends-and-family transfer. There is no chargeback route.
  • No timestamp photo. A photo with the date and the seller name on paper is a low bar and a real filter.
  • No serial on the caseback photo. Ask for a clear macro shot before payment.

Payment and returns

Use a payment method with a dispute process. Keep the chat log and the listed specs. Photograph the parcel before you open it. Test the watch on arrival: winding feel, crown action, date change, and timekeeping over 24 hours. Report a mismatch inside the return window, not after it.
