Short answer
IW329040 is an IWC reference number. IWC writes references as IW plus six digits. A fake IW329040 is a watch that carries that number and the IWC name but was not made by IWC Schaffhausen. Buyers meet two versions: a counterfeit sold as a genuine watch, and a replica sold with the word replica attached. The reference number alone tells you nothing about origin. The case back, the movement, the crystal and the paperwork do.
Reference number basics
IWC groups references by model line. The six digits after IW mark the model, the dial color, the strap or bracelet, and the metal. IWC's own site and authorized dealers list the current names and specs. Secondary sellers attach the wrong reference to a watch with some frequency. Before you pay, match the reference on the case back to the reference in the listing. A mismatch is a warning sign.
Case, crystal and dial checks
- Crystal: IWC Pilot's Watches use sapphire with antireflective coating on both faces. Replica crystals show a blue or purple tint under a lamp. Sapphire resists a scratch from a steel key. Mineral glass does not.
- Case finish: look at the transition between brushed and polished surfaces. Genuine cases show a sharp, straight line. Replicas show a soft or wavy edge.
- Dial print: the IWC logo, the reference text and the index markers sit on the same plane. Crooked markers, thick font or a raised date window frame point to a fake.
- Lume: hold a phone light on the dial for 30 seconds, then check the glow in a dark room. Genuine Super-LumiNova glows green or blue with an even coat.
Movement
IWC fits in-house calibers to current Pilot's Watches. Older references use modified ETA or Sellita movements. A replica holds a Seagull, a Miyota or a low-grade clone. Signs to check: a rotor that rattles when you shake the watch, a power reserve short of the figure in the listing, a date that flips at 11:50 pm or 12:20 am, and a winding feel that grinds. Ask the seller for a photo of the movement. A closed case back hides the answer.
Case back, serial and papers
Genuine engraving is deep and crisp, cut into the metal. Replica engraving is shallow, printed or laser-etched with a wide, soft line. IWC puts the reference and a unique serial on the case back. Serial numbers repeat across replica batches. A box, a warranty card and a booklet are easy to copy. Papers raise the price of a fake without proving origin.
Replica grades and what the labels mean
Sellers use terms like AAA, 1:1, mirror grade and Swiss movement. These are marketing labels, not standards. No replica comes from IWC tooling, IWC cases or IWC movements. The real differences between grades are the steel alloy, the crystal material, the movement base and the dial print. A $200 replica and a $600 replica can share the same case and differ in the movement.
Price and legal facts
IWC Pilot's Watches sell new from about $4,000 to $12,000, and higher for precious metal. A full set with box and papers at 10 percent of list price is not a bargain. In the United States, importing counterfeit goods is prohibited under 19 U.S.C. 1526, and CBP can seize a shipment. Selling a counterfeit can bring a Lanham Act claim from the trademark owner.
