How to Identify a Fake Omega Speedmaster

Start with the movement. The Omega Speedmaster Professional is hand-wound. It is never automatic and never quartz. A Moonwatch with a date window, a rotor behind a display back, or a chronograph seconds hand that ticks once per second is not a Moonwatch. Omega has built the Speedmaster Professional in manual-wind form since 1957. Reference 310.30.42.50.01.002 uses the calibre 3861, a hand-wound co-axial movement with a 50-hour power reserve.

Movement and winding feel

Genuine 1861 and 3861 calibres wind with a light, even ratchet. The crown turns about two and a half turns from stop to full power. Many replicas use a Seagull ST19 column-wheel movement. That movement is hand-wound, but winding is coarse and the chronograph start has a hard click. Other fakes hide a quartz module behind a decorated plate. Genuine pushers have short travel and a crisp return.

Dial and sub-dial layout

The Speedmaster Professional has three sub-dials: 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, small seconds at 9, and 12-hour counter at 6. On reference 3570.50.00 the sub-dials sit level with the main dial. On the 3861 the sub-dials are recessed behind a stepped edge. Replicas often show flat sub-dials or a step that is too shallow. The OMEGA wordmark on a hesalite Moonwatch is flat paint. The sapphire version uses an applied metal logo.

Bezel and tachymeter

Reference 3570.50.00 has a dot set on the diagonal to 90. The 3861 has the dot over 90. Replicas often mix the two. The aluminum bezel insert on a genuine watch has a matte anodized finish. Fake inserts are glossy, and the printed numerals show soft edges under a loupe.

Crystal and caseback

Genuine hesalite crystals are domed acrylic. A faint mould line sits near the edge under magnification. The Moonwatch caseback is a screw-down medallion, not a display back. It carries the seahorse, the reference number, and the text "FLIGHT-QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS". Replicas often use a sapphire display back. Omega never fitted one to the standard Moonwatch.

Dimensions and weight

The 1861 case measures 42 mm across, 13.2 mm thick, with a 20 mm lug width. The 3861 adds 0.4 mm of thickness. A steel Moonwatch on a bracelet weighs about 150 g. Replicas come in lighter because the case is thinner or the bracelet uses hollow links. Check lug hole placement and spring bar fit as well.

Serial numbers, papers, and price

Every genuine Speedmaster carries a serial number on the movement and a reference number engraved on the caseback. Omega can confirm a serial against its production archive. A Moonwatch offered under 3,000 USD with box and papers is a warning sign. So is a seller who cannot show a service record or an original warranty card.

Legal status in the United States

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and sell in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 sets a maximum of 10 years in prison for a first trafficking offense and 20 years for a second. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit goods at ports of entry. A replica sold as a genuine watch is also fraud.

What replicas cannot match

Movement finishing, the co-axial escapement, the Master Chronometer rating of 0 to +5 seconds per day, and 15,000 gauss magnetic resistance. No replica carries those specs, and none appears in the Omega serial archive.
