The real watch

How the two dials work
One movement drives both faces. The front dial shows hours, minutes, and small seconds. The rear dial shows a second time zone. The wearer sets that second zone from the flank of the case. A slider or a pusher sits on the case band, and it moves the rear hands without touching the front time. Some versions add a day and night indicator on the rear dial.
The back of a Duoface is a dial, not a glass caseback. You cannot see the movement from outside.

- Rail action. The real case slides in a straight line and locks at both ends. Copies wobble or stop short of the lock point.
- Thickness. Two dials need space. A case under 9 mm thick with a working rear dial is a warning sign.
- Glass. Both faces use sapphire on the real watch. Mineral glass scratches and reflects more light.
- Rear dial function. Turn the crown and watch the rear hands. If they mirror the front and nothing else, the second dial is decoration.
- Dial print. Check the typeface, the spacing, and the Swiss Made mark at 6 o'clock. Copies place the text too high or too low.
- Hands and indexes. Real hands are dauphine shaped. Indexes are applied metal, not printed.
- Case number. Engraving depth and font on the outer carrier. Laser marks look shallow and flat.

Case shape, dial color, and strap are the easy parts. A copy can match the outside dimensions to within a fraction of a millimeter on a bench. Two parts are hard: the rail tolerance, and the gear train that lets one movement run two dials with separate time zones. A copy that lacks the second time zone function has one dial and a printed rear face.
