A fake Rolex Submariner is a watch built to copy the Submariner case, dial, bezel, and bracelet. Prices run from about $60 for a quartz copy to $700 for a "super clone" with a cloned automatic movement. The genuine Submariner 124060 has a 41 mm Oystersteel case, 300 m water resistance, a Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert, and the Caliber 3230 with a 70-hour power reserve. Replicas copy the look. They do not copy the movement, the steel, or the warranty.
What "1:1" and "super clone" mean
Both terms describe fit and finish, not origin. A 1:1 replica aims for case dimensions that match the genuine watch to within a fraction of a millimeter. A super clone adds a movement built to resemble the Rolex caliber, with 28,800 vibrations per hour and a similar bridge layout. Sellers use these labels with no standard definition. Two watches from different factories can both be listed as 1:1 and differ in case thickness by 0.5 mm.
Movements inside replica Submariners
Four movement families show up in the market.
- Quartz: lowest tier, battery powered, no sweep.
- Asian 2824 and 2836 clones: 28,800 vph, 38 to 40 hour reserve, with date.
- Clone 3135: built to look like the Rolex 3135, common in date models.
- Clone 3230 and 3235: newer versions, 70 hour reserve claimed, 28,800 vph.
Most clone movements come from factories in Guangzhou. Parts supply differs by maker, so service options are narrow. An independent watchmaker can regulate one. Few will warranty it.
Case, bezel, and bracelet checks
Measure the case. A genuine Submariner 41 measures about 41 mm across, 12.4 mm thick, and 47.6 mm lug to lug. Listings that show 13 mm or more point to a thicker caseback. Check the bezel insert. The genuine insert is ceramic with a platinum-coated scale. Replicas use ceramic or aluminum, and the numerals can sit shallow. Check the crown guards, the lug profile, and the seam between the end links and the case. A gap over 0.2 mm shows in daylight.
Common tells on a fake
- Cyclops magnification: genuine is 2.5x, replicas often run 2x or 3x.
- Date font: characters too thick or too wide.
- Pip at 12 o'clock: wrong shape, wrong height, wrong color.
- Rehaut engraving: shallow depth, poor alignment with the dial.
- Lume: genuine Chromalight glows blue, some replicas glow green.
- Clasp stamping depth and bracelet codes.
- Crown action: a genuine 3230 winds with light, even resistance.
Price bands
Quartz copies: $60 to $120. Mid-tier automatic: $150 to $300. Super clone with a clone 3135 or 3235: $400 to $700. Above $800, a buyer pays for sourcing, not parts. Water resistance claims over 100 m on a replica are unsupported. Gaskets in most replicas carry no rating.
Legal and service notes
Rolex does not authorize replica production. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at import under 19 U.S.C. 1526. Selling a replica as genuine falls under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Service for a clone movement runs $80 to $200 at an independent watchmaker. Genuine Rolex service starts near $600 and includes parts no replica carries.
