The code iw938989 does not match any reference number in the IWC catalog. It is a seller code used by replica watch dealers. The number labels one listing, not a watch family. Buyers see it on product pages, order forms, and forum posts. It maps to a single replica build: a case, a dial, a movement, and a bracelet or strap. It carries no IWC serial number and no IWC warranty.
What the Number Covers
Dealers assign codes to separate builds that look similar. Two codes can describe the same IWC model with different movements or finishes. One code may cover a Japanese movement version and a Swiss clone version. Ask the seller which movement sits in the watch. Ask for case diameter in millimeters and lug width. Ask for the factory name.
What "Clone" Means Here
In replica listings, "clone" refers to a movement copied from a Swiss design, most often the ETA 2824 or the Valjoux 7750. Factories in China machine parts to match Swiss part dimensions. A clone movement accepts Swiss-spec parts in some cases, but tolerances differ. A Miyota 9015 is a Japanese movement, not a clone, and it is not Swiss. Sellers use "1:1" to mean the case and dial follow the original measurements. That claim needs a caliper check.
Checks Before You Buy
- Case diameter and thickness against the IWC spec sheet.
- Movement name, beat rate (28,800 vph for most clones), and power reserve.
- Dial print: font weight, spacing, and logo position.
- Water resistance rating. Most replicas list 30 m or 50 m with no test report.
- Weight in grams. Steel cases vary by machining.
Limits and Legal Status
IWC does not service replica watches. Authorized dealers refuse them for repair. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at import. Selling counterfeit goods is illegal under U.S. trademark law. A replica carries no resale value beyond the parts. Movement replacement cost can exceed the price of a new replica.
