Answer first
"Rotonde 4200" is a search term, not a Cartier reference. Cartier catalogs the Rotonde de Cartier as a case shape inside its Fine Watchmaking line. The 4200 in replica listings points to a caliber number stamped on a caseback, and that number does not match one single factory movement. Most listings that use it sell a 42 mm or 43 mm steel case, Roman numerals, a guilloche center, and a small seconds hand at 6 o'clock. Ask the seller for the movement name, the measured case diameter, and the crystal type before you pay. If the answer is "Swiss movement" with no caliber code, treat the listing as unknown.
What the Rotonde case is
Cartier lists Rotonde cases from 35 mm to 47 mm across references. The round case has a thin bezel, a cabochon crown, and lugs that curve down from the caseband. Dials carry Roman numerals, a rail track, and blued or steel hands. Genuine Rotonde watches run manufacture calibers. Cartier marks those calibers with an "MC" suffix, for Manufacture Cartier.
Case sizes a seller may quote
- 35 mm to 36 mm: dress size, close to a Tank or a small Ronde.
- 40 mm: common in replica listings.
- 42 mm to 43 mm: large model, the size most "4200" listings use.
- 47 mm: Astrotourbillon case, rare in replica form.
Movements found in replicas
- Quartz. Thin, low cost, ticking seconds hand. Not correct for a Rotonde.
- Asian automatic at 21,600 vph. Six beats per second, choppy sweep.
- Sea-Gull ST2130 or a 2824 clone. 28,800 vph. Eight beats per second.
- Sea-Gull ST19 or ST25. Manual wind, used when the dial carries small seconds.
Check the beat rate before you buy. A 28,800 vph movement gives a sweep near a genuine mechanical caliber. A 21,600 vph movement does not.
Checks before payment
- Ask for the movement code and the beat rate.
- Ask for the case diameter in millimeters, measured with a caliper, not quoted from a spec sheet.
- Confirm sapphire crystal. Mineral glass scratches within months.
- Confirm water resistance. A 3 bar rating covers splashes only. Do not swim.
- Check dial printing at 10x. Thick paint and merged letters show up.
- Check strap width at the lugs. Odd sizes make replacement straps hard to source.
What a replica does not include
Cartier will not service, authenticate, or repair a replica. An independent watchmaker can service a 2824 clone at low cost. Parts for a quartz or a 21,600 vph movement are harder to source. Replicas have no collector resale market, and prices drop on resale. Gold plating wears through on the caseback and crown. A 1:1 replica copies the outside of the watch. It does not copy the movement inside. Ask for photos of the caseback, the crown, and the dial under magnification before you send money, and confirm the return terms in writing.
