Short answer
Two labels appear on many replica Omega Seamaster watches: a hippocampus (seahorse) emblem and the text "Co-Axial Master Chronometer." The seahorse is a design mark Omega has used on Seamaster models since the 1950s. Co-Axial Master Chronometer is a certification issued by METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, for movements that pass eight test protocols. A replica can print both marks on a dial and caseback. It does not hold the certification. The print is cosmetic.
What each term covers
- Hippocampus. Omega's seahorse emblem. It appears on Seamaster dials, crowns, and casebacks. It is a registered trademark.
- Co-Axial. An escapement design by George Daniels. Omega put it into series production in 1999. The pallet fork has three prongs instead of two, which cuts sliding contact between parts.
- Master Chronometer. A certification granted by METAS. Omega introduced it in 2015. It covers the finished cased watch, not just the movement.

Caliber 8900 carries 39 jewels, runs at 25,200 vibrations per hour, and holds 60 hours of power reserve from two barrels in series. Caliber 8800 uses one barrel and 55 hours.
What replica builds use
Most replica Seamasters run a generic automatic movement. Common bases are the Seagull ST2130, the Hangzhou 6460, or a decorated Asian ETA 2824 clone. Rates sit at 21,600 or 28,800 vibrations per hour. Power reserve lands between 38 and 42 hours in most samples. Casebacks carry an engraved seahorse, and rotor plates are stamped "8900" or "8800." No part of that movement goes to METAS. Sellers often write that a movement is "decorated like" the 8900. That phrase means the rotor and bridges are engraved. It does not mean the mechanics match.
How to check a claim
- Ask for the METAS certificate number. Genuine Master Chronometer watches ship with a card holding an 8-digit code that Omega's site can look up.
- Ask for a timegrapher photo. A 0/+5 second result across positions is hard to fake.
- Read the caseback text. Genuine watches use the METAS wording, not a misspelled variant.
- Magnet test. A 15,000 gauss rating means the watch keeps running after sitting on a strong magnet. A standard replica movement stops or gains minutes.
Legal status in the United States
US law treats replica watches carrying a protected mark as counterfeit goods. 18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy shipments. Buyers can lose the item and the payment. Sellers face fines and prison terms. Omega registers the hippocampus mark and the Seamaster name with the USPTO.
