A replica Portugieser Tourbillon is a copy of IWC's Portugieser tourbillon line. Street prices run $400 to $1,500. Genuine references sell for $50,000 and up. The copies use Chinese-made tourbillon movements. IWC does not make those movements, does not sell those parts, and does not service those watches.

What the original watches are

The current flagship is the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph, reference IW3940. It has a 43.5 mm case in platinum or 18k rose gold, a flying minute tourbillon at 12 o'clock, a retrograde date, and a chronograph. Calibre 89900. Water resistance is 6 bar. The Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound, reference IW5463, drops the chronograph and uses a hand-wound calibre. Older references such as the Tourbillon Mystère Rétrograde trade on the used market.

Which references get copied

Factories target the IW3940 first, then the older Mystère cases with the tourbillon bridge. Case sizes on copies run 42 mm to 44 mm, close to the originals. Factory names that appear in listings include ZF and V7F. Two models often share one case, so measure before you compare a listing to a reference number.

The tourbillon inside a replica

Two types show up in the trade.

  • Real tourbillon: the balance wheel, pallet fork, and escape wheel sit inside a rotating cage. Seagull and Hangzhou build these movements.
  • Fake tourbillon: an open-heart cutout with a spinning disc. No escapement sits inside the cage.

To check, watch the balance. On a real tourbillon the balance wheel travels with the cage. On a fake it stays still or sits outside the cutout. Power reserve on the Chinese tourbillon movements runs 40 to 60 hours. Beat rate is often 21,600 vph, or 3 Hz.

Case, dial, and strap

  • Case: 316L stainless steel, gold-plated on gold-tone models. Platinum copies use steel with a light brushed finish.
  • Crystal: sapphire, with anti-reflective coating on one side on most copies.
  • Dial: applied indices on the better builds, printed indices on cheap ones. Genuine dials use gold indices.
  • Strap: embossed calf leather. Genuine straps are alligator.
  • Water resistance: most listings state no tested rating. Do not swim with one.

Price tiers

  1. $250 to $450: decorated automatic movement, fake tourbillon cutout, plated case.
  2. $500 to $900: working Chinese tourbillon, sapphire crystal, cleaner dial printing.
  3. $1,000 to $1,500: closest case and dial work, finished movement plates, thicker gold plating.

What a copy cannot match

IWC finishes its tourbillon cages by hand, poises the balance, and regulates each watch in six positions. Chinese movements get basic regulation. Plating wears through at the crown, lugs, and caseback within a few years of daily wear. Service is the other gap. IWC will not touch a counterfeit, and many independent watchmakers decline Chinese tourbillon movements because parts are hard to source.

Legal note

In the US, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments, and the trademark owner can file civil claims. A personal purchase is not charged the same as a sale, but the shipment can still be seized and destroyed.
