What the reference 6263 actually is
Rolex built the reference 6263 from roughly 1971 to 1988. It is a manual-wind Cosmograph in an Oyster case, which means a screw-down crown and two screw-down pushers. The movement was the Valjoux 727, a column-wheel chronograph with a slow beat rate. The crystal was domed acrylic, with no cyclops. The 6263 carried a black acrylic bezel insert, while its near-identical sibling, the 6265, used a steel bezel. That one difference is the quickest way to spot a mislabeled or swapped watch.
The case measures 37 mm across and takes a 20 mm strap or bracelet. Dials came in matte black and silver, with tritium lume and a 3-6-9 subdial layout: running seconds on the left, a 30-minute counter on the right, and a 12-hour counter at the bottom. The red DAYTONA signature that gives the "Big Red" its nickname is a print variation on the dial, not a separate reference number.

- Digital calipers that read to 0.01 mm.

- Reference photos of an authenticated 6263 dial, case profile, and caseback.
- Ten minutes with the watch in hand, not a seller's studio image.
How to check a replica Daytona 6263
- Measure the case diameter. It should land at 37 mm, give or take 0.3 mm.
- Measure the case thickness at the crystal. Expect roughly 13 mm. Anything above 14 mm usually hides an automatic movement and the wrong caseback height.
- Look at the bezel. A black insert means 6263 geometry. A polished steel ring means the builder copied a 6265.
- Unscrew both pushers and screw them back down. They should travel with light, even resistance and stop cleanly. Gritty threads or pushers that never seat point to a cheap case.
- Check the crown. It should be about 6 mm, sit close to the case, and show a crisp coronet with defined points.
- Inspect the crystal. Domed acrylic, no magnifier, and the edge should sit level with the bezel instead of standing proud of it.
- Run the chronograph. Press start and watch the center seconds sweep. The right subdial should jump once per minute, and the bottom subdial should count hours.
- Press reset and confirm all three hands snap back to zero. A slow or drifting return means a worn or low-grade movement.
- Wind it by hand. A manual movement feels smooth and takes roughly 35 turns from a full stop. Rotor noise or a spinning weight means the case holds an automatic caliber.
- Study the dial under the loupe. Check coronet shape, letter spacing, and the gap between the print and the top subdial. Old tritium should read as dull cream, not bright green.
- Compare the hand shapes. Subdial hands should match the reference in length and tip style, not the generic sticks found on budget builds.
- Weigh the watch. A steel 6263 on an Oyster bracelet sits in the region of 90 to 100 grams. A 130-gram watch is a different animal.
- Turn the watch over. Look for stamped reference and serial numbers between the lugs and on the caseback. A blank or laser-etched case is a generic one.
- Keep it dry. Even with screw-down pushers, do not swim or shower with a replica. Gasket quality is the one part you cannot verify by eye.
Red flags
- A date window. The 6263 has no date, ever.
- Subdials placed at 12, 6, and 9, or a 6-9-12 arrangement.
- A thick, flat sapphire crystal instead of domed acrylic.
- Bright glowing lume on a watch meant to look 40 years old.
- Push-in pushers that never unscrew.
- Dial print in a sans-serif font, or a DAYTONA signature in the wrong color.
